I just find it a bit fiddly having to use the hat for several different things using modifiers (view, Shvkal, etc) so with Freetrack it would make that a bit simpler, as well as allow me to look around the cockpit without having to let go of the stick and use the mouse.
I can't really help you with the A-10 as I only have the KA-50 but this looks like a friendly group who say they welcome players of all skill levels, so they'll probably be a good start http://flight-sim-fanatics.com/index.php?topic=6.0
I might even join them myself and maybe we'll see each other there! Whilst DCSW is a peer-to-peer rather than dedicated server multiplayer, you'd need missions designed for both the A-10 and KA-50 to allow both of us to play, which I don't have but they will.
There's this cool TS3 plugin for DCSW called TARS which enables proper radio comms but I don't know if they use that
