Serpent Rising FHQ
Great moody mission. Zodiac insertions are cool and the mission had great setup with nice background/briefing. I was a grenadier in Varanon's Alpha team. Nice execution and action when taking the beachhead and the bridge.
In the camp we came under a surprise visit by a BRDM which was swiftly dealt with. One of the game savers. On our route to second objective we decided not to use the road, apparently as we came under fire from there and there was another heavy vehicle. We pushed to AA camp through forest. Short fun action at AA camp, hike to extraction and mission complete. Nice job leaders. Sahrani is still very new map to me so it was fun. Really looking forward to next episode.
Deciding factor
This was a bit of a interim work, snack and not one of my magnum opuses. I didn't really like the mission but I rarely like my missions anyway.
I was a simple rifleman, the sinew of the armed forces. Alpha actual was Den and Comrade McGregor led Bravo. It turned out we played the old version of a mission, the new one would have been a bit different. This was bread and butter no frills infantry job in the forest.
Den chose to approach the objective from southeast corner and cut the route of a Command truck. In the start we dodged USMC ambush at the farmhouse and we headed to forest. We came close to kill box and started sweeping the area. We came across the command truck, eliminated it, and kept moving. Eventually we came across the tank that mopped us up last time. Bravo team neutralized it. With a bit of divine assistance we got more illumination, continued our SnD, and finished mission.
This map's beef is the forest. It is also detailed, and enemies, especially at night, are pain to spot. Den chose to move relatively slowly and took our time. That was a good overall plan. Spot hostiles, stay in cover, use grenades, small flanking, rinse and repeat. Bread and butter. Problem is that forest is like a real forest. Getting lost is easy, and losing LOS to your team mates is easy and formations take much more effort.
Island Thunder 2
Fun mission!
Variable took command of Alpha, I took over Bravo. We chose to use the boats to cut down transit time and in heavy Pacific waves we set off. Action at LZ was short, and we overcame the opposition.
We started moving to objective with familiar move/cover, take turns, etc but it was soon apparent weather would have its challenges. Haze / fog was heavy and at least on my screen I had several issues with spotting targets. However my team, especially Unnamed/McGregot hunter/killer team did great work in finding hostiles from the mist.
Crossing the small isthmus was particularly tough action. We neutralized the bunker on south after heavy firefight, but my team took plenty of fire from across the inlet. We RV'd with Alpha who made the push across as we covered. Then other way around. We had constant skirmishes from 360 until things calmed down near our final objective, airfield. We put our optics to work and Alpha moved to secure the area.
At this phase we started receiving enemy reinforcements to our rear. Alpha ordered my team to move in, and I left McG/Unnamed HK team to provide rearguard as Bravo moved to secure comms tower. One nasty incident at comms tower. I simply missed one hostile in small guard hut. I heard Alwarren declare hostiles, I turned around, and had both Alwarren and hostile on my line of fire. Fortunately no casualties but I should have provided more clear orders who does what, who clears what.
I was concerned of my rear guard as Unnamed/McG were constantly under fire and I requested permission to leave the site and return to action but we had another route for extraction. I pulled my team back, and we prepared for a march to exit until mission ended. Solid job team B, and again, I had clear orders/great coop with my superior officer (Variable, A-actual).
I liked the mission setup, mood, but haze was too heavy for my personal tastes. This is turning out to be a nice campaign andlook forward to more.
Ambush the convoy
Nice simple mission! I decided to setup the ambush point relatively close after a bit of thinking and consulting opinions of the populus.
Setup was simple. Mines on road, ambush positions up. Bravo were to ambush APC, my team was to concentrate on light escorts. Charge to truck ASAP and bug out. With a bit of divine spotting the convoy eventually made its way to our ambush. M113 escaped, but escorts were neutralized and Ammo truck was disabled. With a bit of a chaos Manuel got to truck and took off with it taking fire.
I told the truck to get off the road, push to forest and keep moving. Truck was the golden goose. Infantry was expendable. We took fire from 400-500m distance from north. We had option to start a long range shooting contest with ironsight AKS or bug out. From my angle it was a no brainer. Pedal to metal with two feet. It probably wasn't fun. but staying at ambush spot would have been monumentally stupid.
I planned to RV with truck and move with infantry but truck got to extraction, end of mission. Fun snack and good job people, especially Manuel for the truck gauntlet.
To do better:
Even if it is late night, simple mission, I should have preplanned better who does what AFTER we complete the ambush. What is extraction route, RV point, route to truck. Ok, we didn't know at that point where to go, but when we waited for convoy I should have drawn preliminary extraction routes, RV poitns, etc. Now our flight was chaotic even if it apparently worked.
Headhunters Redux
I don't usually enjoy my own missions but this one was nice. I was sniper and Variable led the team.
We sneaked to lighthouse. Variable and I went further and took observation positions. We spotted the target walking around the firing range, inspecting troops. Target stopped to reprimand his men for sloppy firearms handling. Variable reported distance. One click up. Hold breath. Good sight picture. Pad of the finger on the trigger. Custom Timney match trigger action. Shot fired, observation. One hit, one kill, bug out. #HVT 1 down. As the time alarm flares went to the sky the special forces team was already on the offroad cruising to next objective. (Honestly the range was trivial for a sniper shot but I loved sneaking, setup, and execution)
On route to next objective we came across a patrol on the road. There is no kill like roadkill. We overran one guard, and opened fire from back of the truck upon others. Unfortunately they managed to return fire before we got 'em, and Misha was KIA at ths point.
We checked a small hut and found evidence of FIA / CSAT clash. No survivors, but .50 cal on technical was working. It appeared a recent incident, and soon CSAT Ifrit came across the hill to investigate. It was soon pelted with .50 cal rounds, and infantry team moved in to eliminate the survivors.
Next step was observation post and HVT #2. We spotted observation tower and Variable told us to go around. This turned out to be a good maneuver and we managed to surprise them. Short firefight at point blank range and HVT #2 down. However firefight awoke the driver of the truck containing SIGINT equipment. He started the truck and put pedal to metal. Variable ordered men to commandeer empty Ifrit, and they went to pursue the truck. I was left behind to observation post with Manuel but we soon heard good news on radio. 007 car chase ended to destruction of the target truck. Alwarren's explosives did the trick.
We had spotted HVT #3 at Camp Rogain 800m away. We planned to use captured mortar to pelt the target area with indirect fire. Unfortunately our loud firefight and allied air strike to M-26 had awoken the place. Enemy reinforcements started pouring in. We had clash with enemy infantry, Marid, and incoming helicopter. I opened fire with my heavy sniper rifle rounds and Variable grabbed RPG from Ifrit and scored a hit. The following firefight was one of most chaotic I have experienced for a while and I am surprised we only lost Varanon. We managed to put off some mortar rounds to Rogain, which apparently eliminated our HVT #3. Time to bug out.
During our drive to patrol boat we came across Marid on the road.
Stag: Hey' is that thing armed?!?!
Variable: What thing?
Stag: Um the Ifrit that just drove past us?
Alwarren: It isn't Ifrit. It is Marid.
40mm grenades opened on us but Variables Ifrit smokescreen (underused feature people) saved us and we managed to make our way to extraction. I thought the FIA guys had returned but instead they turned out to be CSAT. However we saw them before they saw us, and we executed ambush. 2 seconds of firefight, all done.
We commandeered a patrol boat and made our way to extraction under moonlight. Mission complete. Awesome job everyone. Great leading, great execution.
