Infantry Tactics - Alwarren - 10-13-2014

Hi.

As I said on the latest debriefing post, there are a few basic infantry tactics that I think everybody should familiarize themselves with. There are videos made by Dsylexi on YouTube for the two I want to mention today.

Bounding Overwatch
Bounding Overwatch is probably a well-known concept. Basically, two or more units move in an alternating fashion, while one holds and covers, the other moves forward. This is used primarily to cover open spaces or to move when enemy contact is imminent or very likely.

I feel that knowing these tactics will help.

Good advice, thanks. I was familiar with Bounding but not with Peeling, so I've learnt something useful Smile

Re: Infantry Tactics - Phantom - 10-13-2014

I think some of few times I saw peeling was on CK Recovery mission when Alwarren called it. Didn't know the term for it until now. I'm familiar with bounding overwatch though.

Re: Infantry Tactics - Alwarren - 10-13-2014

I tired peeling once before, when we were to extract from an airfield with a stolen chopper. It went bad because people confused the directions, running forward instead of sidewards, but I didn't really have time to explain it during the mission in enough detail, apparently.

Still, it is a valid tactic, and I would like to try this more often, but it requires people to know what it actually is, which is the major problem; some players never read the forum, or the website.

Peeling worked pretty well on Sunday when we head toward's Alpha (or was it Bravo) position.

Nothing gets me more excited than a well planned and executed recce.  Unfortunately recon doesn't usually translate too well into exciting gameplay for most players as there's very little shooting and lots of walking/crawling/sneaking around looking at things.
I've found in my experiences with coop missions that it is usually too much to ask for a large percentage of the players to sit around doing little while a handful conduct reconnaissance even if it will benefit the group as a whole.

Personally I love recon missions. I don't measure by number of shots fired. A good recon mission can be scary as hell :-)

I actually find a well done recon stealth game to be scarier than a horror game itself (especially since nowadays sometimes you just get big guns). You just feel way too close for comfort when the situation becomes tense and you pray to not get spotted.

I just dont think its easy to design and create a mission where sending out a recon team is the only option players have, because most of the time you can just go head on blitzkrieg and defeat an enemy force 2-3 times larger than yourself. The ai are too stupid to be a significant threat in 1 on 1 battles and charging out is usually the most time efficient method in most cases.
I tried to design a mission where recon tactics were paramount to succeeding a mission by having an extremely deadly and large enemy force that outnumbered friendlies, but it proved too challenging and overwhelming(tedious)

If I remember correctly a mission by Wolle where resistance hold off while Spetsnaz team try to steal a combat chopper to help support the resistance back in CWR2 might be feasible for some kind of spec ops team to support.

The german army upgrades their machine guns, gave me some insights about what an effective autorifleman is.

I love how the article states that the mg3 is a WWII era weapon, while the US still uses the M2 which was developed near the end of WWI

And the obsolete G3 is still a very precise and reliable weapon. Slap a scope on it, and you got a perfect DMR.

Not to mention that the main US assault rifle is made in the 1950's
