Re: DCS: World - kutya - 09-11-2014

I've been doing some Su-25T target practice, tried out various weapons, shot some targets and thought, what the hell, I'm ready to play a campaign. So started the Su-25T campaign. My ass was handed to me in about 5 minutes. I don't even know what I did wrong. Everything happened so fast, that I didn't learn anything Big Grin

It would be really nice to have a campaign for noobs.

Yeah, I found the same with the KA-50 campaign. Almost as soon as I take-off, there's a missile from somewhere that takes me down. A lot of user-created missions are like this as well. Sometimes it's not as bad and you get to fly somewhere before the missiles come out of nowhere and take you down. I think a mission where the enemy only has bullets, no missiles, would be nice Wink

Here's another mission we might be able to play. It's an escort extraction missions and the extraction can be done by an AI Blackhawk whilst we cover it. It says it adapts to the number of players. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/de/files/340533/

One tip, often missions created with previous versions of DCS have issues when played with newer versions. If you open them in the Mission Editor and re-save them, that fixes 99% of such problems, so please do that with any missions that we run on the server to maximise our chances of them working Wink

Good to know. I don't get it why didn't they a CAS plane campaigns first mission an introductory one? Follow waypoints, shoot some stuff (no AA) and get home. Then introduce some handheld AA stuff, later some serious sh*t. This way I get bored with learning, then I hit a wall when trying to actually play.

I recall the times where there were flight sims with decent dynamic campaigns. Some people whine about Falcon 4.0 being way more simplistic than DCS (level of detail), but I'll never forget the feeling of "being there". I died at start too Big Grin but for me it was more believable.

Also had great fun with Total Air War (F22). The dynamic campaign was far from perfect, but I really enjoyed deep strikes once the enemy's air defense was weakened. Same feeling of "being there".

TBH I don't get the same in DCS. It's obviously ages ahead of Falcon regarding fidelity, but it lacks the soul of Falcon. You die? Just restart the mission. Didn't die (theoretically in my case Smile )? Next mission. In the case of DCS it doesn't really matter how well you did, the next mission always starts the same. Okay, there are variations, but you get the point.

Il2DCG (dynamic campaign for Il2 Sturmovik) isn't really deep, but it's way more satisfactory for me, than all the linear campaigns people made. This is my usual rant about Arma missions too Big Grin Don't stray away from the waypoints, you'll find an empty map.

Re: DCS: World - kutya - 09-12-2014

I found out that the Create Fast Mission is a handy tool for creating rookie missions. A couple clicks and I had some air superiority fun.

If I can remember A-10C campaign was more gradual when it comes to difficulty. Think first few missions offered no serious AA threat, and in the rest of the missions I always died because I flew too close to a known AA areas. Haven't tried Su-25T campaign, but you should always try to hit targets from a far, just in case there's AA guarding the area, and most cases there is. You can always see in debriefing screen who hit what and what got you.

Or, you can use icons in game, which will show you type of the unit and its side, it's a bit cheating, but good for beginners, at least it will prevent you into going into AA infested area unknowingly.

This might be a bit advanced for us now but might be good to try in the future:

You can get slmod here http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2128411&postcount=681%7CSLMod You just need to unzip the net folder into your saved games\dcs\scripts and then next time you run DCS (might need to start a mission), it will create a saved games\dcs\slmod folder. In there, there'll be a missions folder, so put any missions you want to play on the server in there.

It keeps player stats, which might be useful (or embarassing!) and allows you to change the mission via the chat window (type "-admin load") and various other admin stuff.

Another really cool thing is Tacview, which records the data from each flight and allows you to watch it back in 2D later to see what happened and learn lessons. http://lomac.strasoftware.com/tacview-download-en.php

Once you've installed it and enabled "Record [DCS World] flights" you don't need to keep Tacview running.

Gonna check it all out, during the weekend. Mission change during the play is simple as it is, I don't know if we need addon for that, and stats are accessible anytime I think pressing some key, not sure which though.

But that addon which puts server missions in single folder is handy, default system for storing missions is very messy.

Yeah, many people wish for a dynamic campaign in DCS. Maybe one day! I guess if people are playing online, then it's possible for the admins to make a dynamic campaign, as in if you die you don't get to play in the next mission (or at least not with the plane that got destroyed) and tailor each mission to reflect what happened in the previous one but it would be nice to have a SP dynamic campaign as well.

I think Falcon BMS is pretty high fidelity, for the flight model at least, maybe not so much for radar, AA, etc. Still very popular though. I keep trying to get into it but the control setup is such a mess, with hard to understand text files (and the GUI is pretty bad and has issues with corrupting stuff if you use it to edit the controls after doing stuff in the text file), that I never get very far and I need to sort out a joystick with more hats than my FFB2 to play it really. Apparently v4.33 is going to have a much better controller mapping editor though, so I'll have another look at it then.

Thanks Misha. Slmod does it all but we don't have to use all the features obviously. It probably took me longer to type that post than it will to install it and Tacview, so I hope it doesn't take up too much of your weekend. I can't promise that you won't waste a few hours playing around with those missions and studying your flying in Tacview though Wink

Get the Sabre, you can fly every (well, almost) WW2 plane (and not in the Black Sea region) in Il2 1946 or CoD. Especially with mods. At least that's my reasoning.

BTW I'm trying hard on the Su-25T campaign, but I go back and forth between mission 1 and 2. I'm getting the hang of it, but still air defense gets me over time. I think I have 7 missions in my current campaign, and still at the beginning Smile But it's fun, nevertheless. Maybe would even more if the missions would vary more.

Re: DCS: World - Misha - 09-13-2014

You're right,  I don't see a reason for now to buy ww2 planes when you have other more comprehensive simulators of that era. I would like to try Il2 Battle of Stalingrad for example rather than to have game which does not offer a suitable map,  ground units and many other planes nescessary for a complete ww 2 sim.

Re: DCS: World - kutya - 09-13-2014

The old Il2 1946 is king in my book, just like Arma2. The amount of content is amazing.
