Voice acting in missions - SPhoenix - 05-25-2015

In missions, voice acting is really livening up the atmosphere and creating believable scenarios.
It doesn't actually take much; but if you're using sideRadio to mention something, wouldn't you rather have someone tell you than reading some text?

Some lines are already recorded: see database here.

Thankfully, we now have Reddit's /r/RecordThis to help us.
You can make a post to ask for help and they will record your lines for free! Most of them have access to professional equipment and will be able to act a certain way if you make it clear!
The only thing is: remember they are doing this for free - show respect and leave any entitlement at the door.
Example of asking for lines: http://www.reddit.com/r/recordthis/comments/32qd6w/request_voices_for_a_mission_in_arma_video_game/

I personally have a couple of voices I like and go back to:
- Shawn Hertel, aka guitarpick8120
- bFusion, who likes his credits to be his website, abstractionmusic.com

As for how to integrate them, I usually just use sideRadio and declare the line in the description.ext. Nothing fancy!

Let me know if you have any question!

Re: Voice acting in missions - Variable - 05-25-2015

Thanks SPhoenix, this is most helpful! I really hope to see voice acting becoming a standard (as long as it doesn't increase production time for too long).
I encourage everybody to use also female actresses. They can be perfect for HQ lines (as long as the intonation is correct) but I wouldn't rule out field operatives lines, would be refreshing! In my never released mission I had some lines prepared for a female Russian HQ officer that feeds the ground Spetsnaz team with instructions and intel, would have turned out nicely...

I would like to volunteer for every east-european accent and broken English role (remember voice acting from OFP), and I will have proper mic available for recording.  I can also read Russian.

Setting topic as sticky.

Re: Voice acting in missions - Lightspeed - 05-27-2015

A suggestion:
A lot of missions over time may have generic commentary. So i wonder if we should create a library of voice overs?

Re: Voice acting in missions - Lightspeed - 05-27-2015

I've already got a demo back and he's good!

That's a good idea! We could host them somehow.

Re: Voice acting in missions - SPhoenix - 05-27-2015

Why not simply a Google Sheets like we have for missions but one with the lines in each mission? Then all you need is to depbo the mission in question.

Re: Voice acting in missions - Lightspeed - 05-27-2015

I'd prefer not to have to unpbo.
We will need to figure out some standards  (not too complex).
For example, instead of saying "Viper 1 to Command", could just use "Command....."

Re: Voice acting in missions - Variable - 05-27-2015

Yeah, only members have access to the actual pbos. As far as I remember, OGG (right?) files are rather small, and could be ideal for direct hosting. However, usage rights and credit are in order. Can we cater for that?

Re: Voice acting in missions - SPhoenix - 05-27-2015

We can indeed.

Re: Voice acting in missions - Lightspeed - 05-28-2015

I will post my list of files here and update as I go:
That guy's post was wired to all hell - be careful.
Tank destroyed.
Scratch one piece of Russian scrap.
It's an ambush take cover!
Watch the tops of those embankments.
Recon says there's a lot of boats in the water.
Woah - someone's not getting his damage deposit back.
We can take out the convoy before they hit the beach.
We have to defend the polling center at all costs.
If we clear out the farm first, the rest should be easy.
Sound file - Fence being pushed open.
We're going to have to take out those guard posts.
Several helicopter pilot voices - garble. Good to piece together for some immersion.
We'll have good fire on the beach from up here.
Watch for fire from those high rock formations.
Let's hope there are survivors.
Careful with your fire - we don't want to hit our informant.
We're short on time - let's move out.
Looks like there's one more hostage to go.
He must be heading for the chopper pad!
Radio squelch.
Watch the buildings - the whole place must be rigged to blow!
Looks like they've set up a roadblock.
Keep an eye out for snakes.
Tap being unscrewed sound (good for the oil refinery taps).
I thought this town liked tourists.
We're going to need to take out those watch towers fast!
Watch it!
Friendlies insight.
Enemies sighted.

Here is the sheet regrouping all lines with download link.
Please make sure to properly credit your actors.

Re: Voice acting in missions - Variable - 05-28-2015

Awesome job! So if I use one of the existing lines I just add the name of my mission below the first mission on the Mission Name column?

Re: Voice acting in missions - SPhoenix - 05-28-2015

I didn't think of this haha. Sure, actually, why not!
Thinking about it, this column doesn't really serve any purpose but track where it's used, not sure how useful the information is, but eh!
