You take multiple samples for each pixel, all with a slightly different offset, and average the result. That way, sub-pixels on the edge of things will be smoothed out a bit. Rendering in higher resolution has a similar effect, since the minification onto the screen resolution usually averages multiple pixels into a single one, which is the same basic technique.

The reason why higher resolution sometimes work better is because you can take an about 1.5 or so bigger display and scale down, while AA usually starts at 2

Bottom line, it works (usually) Smile

Ah OK, I'll just use AA then, it's easier  ;D

If AA is fast enough for you, then by all means, use that. I do it as well.

lol, old school for the win  ;D

I spent a fair bit of money and sweat fitting one of these http://www.arctic.ac/eu_en/accelero-xtreme-iii.html to my 6950 (maybe I've got the Xtreme II, anyway it was a lot cheaper back then), as I'm really sensitive to noise from my PC, so I'm in no rush to upgrade  Wink . I might be able to re-use it on a newer card but it's only designed to fit reference boards and I remember it was quite a hassle trying to find out if it would definitely fit the cards I was considering before buying them.

I guess 4gb won't hurt  but 960 has 128-bit memory bus which is absurd. And I've seen benchmarks where 760 outperformed it in some games. So, choice is now limited between gtx970, ati 285, ati 290, but buying any of these won't make me feel like a winner. :-\  If only gtx970 had price of $350 like in the US. Here it it costs no less than 450 eur.

Have you hit some performance wall with it? I also have 3570k and from what I can tell it still runs great and my 2 year old Windows still has fast boot time and everything else runs without lag (and I didn't overclock it yet). I could bet than even i5-2500 would be good for all current games.

You can buy GTX 970 used with warranty for 350e or new from Hungary look at kupujemprodajem  Wink ...and don't look on 285 that card have 2GB VRAM and is slower than 280/280X  ;D

No real performance wall, no. Sometimes Arma could use a few extra file, like today on Hazar-Kot but IIRC Variabke also only had 2 FPS more than me... ?

Going on budget, thoughts on AMD Radeon R7 250X (R7250X-2GD5)?

This card won "Best graphics card for under $200" on Tom's Hardware. If you up the price a bit, you'll end up at the R9 270.

Here is a link to the article in its entirety. Might be helpful. Also, these charts might be useful as well.

Re: Hardware recommendations - Watchmen - 04-12-2015

I find myself in a weird position lacking a gpu:< Been digging around newegg, forums and youtube for the last 2 weeks and right now what i have in mind is the 280x. The type of person i am would usually never buy something in the "sub-mid range" if i was going to use it for many years, because i believe in buying things once and enjoying it for a long time.

The unusual thing is that my gaming hobby has been taking up a smaller and smaller part of my life since a year ago, not where i have lost interest in games but many that i used to play don't interest me anymore. I've been a huge fps/action genre gamer for years(you should see my battlelog account). So i want to spend more time on my other outdoor hobbies and spend the time for gaming only on the few genres i enjoy, arma being thereSmile Normally i would have gone for the 970 or 290x but this time i want to spend less. I think amd usually offers the better dollar/frame value so ill go for a 280x.

The 300 series is coming up, should i wait or grab a 280x on newegg this week for around $240? Ill be getting the witcher 3 later on, would this be decent? Also does this sound powerful enough for arma3 with my 3570k?

Re: Hardware recommendations - Watchmen - 04-12-2015

The average price of a 280x is $250. And idea why these 290's are cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202146 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150697

Re: Hardware recommendations - Misha - 04-15-2015

OK, incoming review of Asus gtx970 mini version:

Tested it on GTA V, works flawlessly, super smooth framerates, memory usage 60%, peak GPU utilization 90%,
max temperature 71 C, a tiny bit more noisy than my previous MSI gtx660ti but it still can be said that it is quiet.

Going to test more games when I have time, Far Cry 4, Arma 3, ...

Re: Hardware recommendations - doveman - 04-15-2015

I just bought GTA V for £20 whilst on a virtual holiday to Brazil. Took two days to download all 64GB! Be interesting to see how it runs on my 6950.
